Captains courageous!

Captains CourageousIT was a clash worthy of a professional world champion’s rich praise and a fitting end to a tremendous advert for amateur boxing.

The Jersey Select lost the Corniche Apartments Gold Cup, 3-2, at Hotel L’Horizon on Saturday night, when an extremely tight split-decision in the final bout went against Captain Craig Culkin.

But after such a ding-dong contest, against the Royal Navy and Marines Select captain Jason Gardner, it was impossible to be anything but uplifted.

Said light-heavyweight Culkin (31), who made his senior debut for Leonis ABC aged 17 against the Royal Marines: ‘I really enjoyed that. That’s what I’m all about. I got beat, but I gave my all.’ Every second of the three three-minute rounds lit up the Jersey Dinner Boxing Club show, already on a high with the appearance of former WBC heavyweight champion Frank Bruno, one of the most loved British sportsmen of the modern era.

Thank you for taking the time to log on and find out more about the Jersey Dinner Boxing Club. The club has been formed solely to support local amateur boxing in Jersey with all profits to be ploughed back into the sport and the development of the youths associated with it. For many years the old Jersey Dinner Boxing & Sporting Club successfully carried out this task under the guidance of Mr. Paul Holley.

Since Mr. Holley’s Retirement various Patrons and Members have been urging me to form a new Club and return it back to its glory nights at the world famous Hotel L’Horizon, St Brelade’s Bay. The New Jersey Dinner Boxing Club nights, once again will be a black tie and evening gown affair, with all of Jersey’s notoriety, celebrities, banking & corporate services expected to attend.

A special rate with the hotel has been set up for supporters wishing to make a complete night of the event, (bed & breakfast). Each event will include special celebrity guests and the usual fun of raffles, bout sponsorship and a charity auction.

New members are welcome to the J.D.B.C with the added guarantee of a seat at the event with recognitions both on our program and website and regular updates within the club. Should your company wish to sponsor any of the events, please contact us to discuss all aspects.

An Evening With Frank Bruno

Former WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World

Frank Bruno

During his amateur career, he amassed a 20-1 career, losing to (and eventually beating) Joe Christie while representing the Philip Game Amateur Boxing Club. His amateur career culminated with Frank boxing for Young England and becoming the youngest ever Amateur British Champion at 18. Frank became a professional boxer in 1980, after twenty-one consecutive wins by knockout. As Great Britain had been starved of World champions in the Heavy weight division for the 20th century there became whispers of suggestions of this big lad from South London getting to the heights of a World championship. But there was to be a wait for a few years! In March 1984, at Wembley future world Heavyweight champion, American James 'Bonecrusher' Smith, then a boxing journeyman, stopped Franks Promised Land in its tracks when he defeated Frank by knockout in the tenth and final round of their bout, with Frank leading on all three judges' cards. This would not be the last time Frank went on to loose a contest he had been clearly winning and would have emerged victorious had he survived until the final bell.
